I am planning a new website which will essentially be a 'Welcome' page and a Forum.

Have you thought ??? about adding a category to discuss forum solution alternatives?

Sure! Your wish is my command.
This board was named just SMF forums but now it is for any forum discussion!

I decided on SMF for a few reasons:
- free
- very actively being developed
- is very customizable.  I wanted the buttons, colors, feel to go with samisite.com
- runs on sql database
- easy installation
- lots of plugins to give more capabilities (don't chose to use them right now, but I Could!  ;))

Do you have a preference of which forum software you want to use?
You can try out several before diving in...see how they feel before you install software.
Highly recommend you go to the OpenSourceCMS site.  They have set up MANY samples of Blog, forum, CMS, e-commerce software you can test right on their site.  Great way to see if you like that type of program without having to install it first!  I tried SMF and a a couple other forums there before installing here.

Hi again..

No, I do not have a disposition toward a specific solution. I have skimmed a few as a 'user'. But that is about it. Hence my request to pony other's experience.

I have used a few forums now and I still like SMF for it's simplicity of set up and use and for the many options it still gives.
