I t was finally sunny today that twas a blessing but its still very cold and I wouldn't go out there without a good jacket myself!

I hope tomorrow will be better - I am usually in Hawaii this time of year and forget how cold it gets in NE FL.

although there are cold parts of Hawaii on the mountains and the bad thing there is in the winter when it gets in the 50s even by the beaches, NOBODY has heat or ac and the building codes are horrible insulation wise so you basically freeze your booty off there too but all the time -

At least here I can just save up for a big electric bill and stay warm!  :)

The inch of snow they predicted has turned into a little more than 3 inches and the high of 29 just made it to 25.  It's sleeting now to put a fresh coat of ice on top of everything.

So silly around here... highs in mid 60's and people are running for HEAVY winter coats!  LOL
Feels REFRESHING and invigorating.

We haven't had our week of 30 degree weather this year to knock out some of the bug population so our mosquitos will be nasty this summer!

33 here and light snow.  We've had a very mild winter until last week.  Two weeks ago the highs were mid 60's and even 70 a couple of days.

I miss cold weather.  I look forward to our 1-2 weeks of nippy nights, and sweaters!

This past November when I went to Germany it felt GREAT being able to wear long sleeves and the one day that was very cold was  :boogie: :boogie: a JOY.

Unfortunately most of this winter has been in the 80s   >:(

You miss cold weather  ???

Just after midnight it's -1 and windy.
When I got out of the car to go into work at 9:30 PM
it was 4 and it felt like my pants froze solid,
my eyes wrere burning in just the short walk from the car to the door.  :surrender:

I want summer  >:(

Didn't ask for negative temps!  But a change of season would be nice again.
90's-106 in summer and 82-85 in the winter is NOT a change of season.

Yes...I MISS cold weather. I look forward to fall for the crispness of the air...not so humid, can walk from the building to your car without building up a slime like in our summers. Look forward to the opportunity to wear things that are just too heavy in other times of the year.  I have one cashmere sweater in light blue that was given to me a while back.  So soft, so yummy. Can bring it out once, maybe twice a season. I love flannel, brushed cottons, corderouy, tweed and other fabrics with texture. I have a terrific long winter coat. Hasn't been out once this year. (On rare occasion, we have been known to get in to the 20's and remain there for a few days so we do need cold clothes.)   Yet I live in Florida, the cotton shorts and tank top state.  BLECH.  I hate it when I am cheated out of our "2 week winter".  It happens every few years and it drives me crazy.  I need it to recharge.  The weather we had in Germany was downright NIPPY and I LOVED IT!  It's FINALLY into the 40's today and I feel good....

On Friday, we had devastaing tornados rip through central Florida.

So far, 20 fatalities and BILLIONS of $ of damages.  Looks like a Cat 5 hurricane.  BLOCK homes ripped off foundations!  The mobile home communities didn't stand a chance.

And last night I found out about the loss of 17 of 18 juvenile Whooping Cranes that had just arrived in Florida. They are believed to have drown during the storms on friday.  I saw them fly over in their migratory flight and it was truly stunning sight!  Magnificient birds.  What a loss!  Horrible for the handlers that are trying so hard to rebuild the population.

I can't remember if I read it or saw it on the news, but the gist of it is that Florida is becoming so overdeveloped that any hurricane or tornado that hit's it will will have devastating consequences. Whereas ten years ago the news would be, "Tornado hits Florida, thankfully it was in a nonpopulated area and there was no fatalities or property damage."

True we have tooo many people moving here.  In this case though, the shear number of tornados, and the wide path make this set of storms unbelievably bad.

This Afternoon: Showers likely. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 45. Windy, with a west wind around 32 mph, with gusts as high as 60 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

Tonight: A chance of showers before midnight. Cloudy, then gradually becoming partly cloudy, with a low around 35. Breezy, with a northwest wind between 23 and 30 mph, with gusts as high as 55 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Two of my cats now live on the porch and attached utility room.
One of them jumps up on the perches I have covered in indoor/outdoor carpeting and lays in the sun/heat for hours.  Her idea of paradise.  With all the rain we have had, the porch is like a sauna these days.

Turtle, you would LOVE it down here.  We have a LONG LONG season that is very (too) warm, and no snow.  Should consider leaving MI for FL.  Just have to dodge a few hurricanes each year.  >:D

Wednesday we had the worst wind storm I can remember.
70+ mph winds ripped up large trees and dropped them on cars and houses.
My neighbor lost a 40 year old Willow, it snapped in half and parts spread all over the area.
I was lucky only lost one large tree branch.
But our community looks like a war zone.
We lost power on Wednesday and just got it back late afternoon today.
We had no cable or Internet until this evening.
Amy was lost without TV or Internet, while I read a book  :)

OH MY....Perfect time to read the new HP book!  Dark gloomy forboding... ;)
I have a lantern that runs on batteries and books galore. Like you I would be content to sit and read.
But do have a little B/W tv for storm situations, takes d cell batteries (and in FLORIDA, we ALLL HAVE BATTERIES!).

She has a little TV too
I save the battery from an old UPS and put a wire on it that plugs into her TV for longer hours.

You mean just plug the power adapter into the outlet on the UPS?
I never thought of doing that but it would draw far less than a PC....
Or Sensei, oh wise one, are you speaking of some other form of connection?
Please teach me this trick!  post image, Tell me how...please.
With our storms this would be a wonderful thing!

Yes me too.  Until dark then must have lantern.

But when we get our storms and have power out for hours or days, knowing WHERE the storms are via tv is a blessing.

No I took the battery out of an old UPS that quit.

I cut the cigarette plug off of the cord for the DC adapter
and hooked it to the old battery.

You could also get a small lawn tractor battery and do the same thing.

I can charge it with my car battery charger in the 2 amp mode for a short while.

uninterruptible power supply (UPS), also known as battery backup.
# A constant, continuous power supply to even out electrical fluctuations
# Auto shutdown software to automatically save files and close applications
# Data line protection to cover Internet, fax, modem or DSL connections
# Sufficient battery runtime to let you finish what you were doing.

With Windows operation system, having a few minutes to safely shutdown your computer
when the power goes out is important.
Even better a short interruption won't cause a data loss.

HMM....Better not fool with it myself.   :(  With my luck I would electrocute myself or set my tv on fire. :-[
I would be better off having a UPS that I can just plug the little TV adapter into.  :)

Wanda:
Power out...UPS kicks in and supplies PC with power.  Some as little as 5 minutes, some as long as 40 minutes...depends on equipment and power of battery. The battery units discharge and recharge repeatedly but eventually they get weak/die.  My last one lasted 3 years and finally had to be replaced.  They often go on sale at office supply stores.  Example search for them h**p://www.officedepot.com/textSearch.do?uniqueSearchFlag=true&Ntt=ups

To buy one, you need to know your equipment.  Most people only plug in Monitor and CPU.  But you may need to plug in an external drive or something else too.  Usually people put printers/scanners into the SURGE protection only plugs on the UPS so they have some protection from surges and spikes but no backup battery time.
Stronger/higher rating gives you EITHER:
longer time to close safely OR supports power hungary equipment OR support more less powerful pieces.
I have weak equipment so I get a strong UPS to give me more TIME.  :)

Lots of small Windows corruptions are caused by sudden hard shut downs that occur at inopportune moments!
We have the UPS units on every machine at the office and I am THANKFUL for it!!!

I have a strong UPS because we have tons of tiny 1-4 second brown-outs in my area.  While working in the pc on bright sunny days or clear evenings at least twice per week, my power gets interrupted enough to shut down tvs, dvds, etc but the UPS backup battery allows me to keep working. Having a battery unit on my computer is a MUST.

lol and here I was thinking of the nice man in the brown truck that brings me all the stuff I buy on line!  LOL Now that I know what it is, I can proudly say that I have a UPS!! woohoo! Although I could use a more powerful one because mine has a very good surge protector built in and I ended up plugging too many things in there and now if the power goes out - no make that when the power goes out like it regularly does due to Florida's lovely thunderstorms ( Lightening capital of the world we are) sometimes I only have a minute to shut down. Without everything on it is supposed to go up to 10 minutes but no way has it ever lasted that long. It does get me through the multiple brown outs that we also have around here. The price of being hooked up to an experimental power plant I guess. Maybe the UPS man will bring me a new UPS soon!?

I tried to get a full house generator system hooked up this year that has an auto power off detector switch mostly for hurricane and severe weather purposes but the budget didn't allow for that and a vacation so I took the vacation!  :D

Wanda, the UPS units are rated to last ONE YEAR.  :yuck:
Many of them will last longer but they do weaken with time so it is always better to have one that exceeds the basic minimum requirement.  Besides, if you get only the minimum needed for your system and your system changes (replace equipment, etc) you may need a stronger UPS to handle the load.

I bought a good UPS many years ago.
There is a battery store here called Batteries Unlimited that will replace the UPS battery in most units.
I just put in my third battery.

And the old one is what I am using for the TV.

For a TV you can get a cigarette lighter socket with a cable and clips on the other end
that you can clip to a small tractor or motorcycle battery if you don't want to mess with the wiring.

On my unit there are outlets with battery backup and others for just filtering.
I have the computer, Monitor and Modem on battery backup.

My Batteries Plus could not replace my UPS battery  :(.  No store had a compatible replacement for the UPS box. Had to replace it.

So... Radio Shack (I LOVE that store even if it is over-priced...) would have the socket/cable combo? HMMMM
Love this idea.  Had a battery charger before the breakin last year. Will check garage tonight to see if I still have it! My grandfather gave it to me and it came in handy several times but have not needed it for quite a while!

Yes, on my UPS, I have monitor, cable modem, CPU, and backup drive on battery backup, scanner and printers are on surge only on the oldest UPS I have that has no battery backup now but still provides nice surge protection.

I did not see the adapter at Radio Shack
but online you can search for it
i.e.  cigarette lighter socket with a cable and clips

like this one

You may be able to find it locally at a car parts store or RV parts store

I feel like the witch in wizard of oz...."I'm melting!"
The temp is high, humidity high and I am turning into a big ball of slime!

Ok.. Where is the cool breeze I ordered???  When there is a breeze it makes things worse, like a convection oven.

When we moved to Florida in late 70's, you could set your watch to the afternoon refreshing rain that would rinse the air and cool the temp 10-15 degrees. That's gone.  And now it's just miserable this year.

I come into my home, adjust the thermostat and never get cool...CALGON....TAKE ME AWAY! Cool bath/shower is the ONLY temporary remedy. But as soon as you open the door to go outside, you step back into the sauna.
