The ABCs of Webmastering
« on: January 21, 2007, 06:42:33 PM »
We play versions of this in another forum Im in and it can be fun ... In here it might lean more towards educational though lol

Pick a subject about web mastering then take turns posting something that would start with the next letter. Who ever posts under z usually pics the next topic. ( you have to get a little especially creative for x and z lol)

OK? I'll get us going  .. The ABCs of  A Good Design

Always research what similar sites have done - so that you can either be more competitive or completely different - depending on the type of site you are creating

( ho gee ok I can see this is going to be more educational than fun lol will have to start another post for fun I guess)

ok next person start with B

Backgrounds can be overwhelming or distracting.  Patterns can be used but check your text for readability.

Consider who your audience is or will be and their probable screen resolutions and ability to navigate web sites in general before you set up your overall design

D is next -- for the alphabetically challenged lol

Don't clutter your site with heaps of distracting animations and text. Keep it clear, crisp, and easily readable, with limited, relevant text and images.

Edit frequently to avoid having a stale web site and one that is full of those awkward phrases that sound so wonderful when you come up with them in the wee hours of the night.  LOL

(Wanda....have you been wandering my site gathering examples of those phrases??? ;))

ahaha No Sam,  I didn't find any on your site - but I find plenty on mine when I do edits since I like to work on my web site late nights especially. And I have to say , when I am visiting other sites it sometimes goes through my head - " Hmmmmm .. They must have written that at about 3:00 in the morning!" lol

Google and other search engines need to be taken into consideration as you build your website. Include the information that they need in your webpages as you go and you will have better success long-term.

HOA Websites are a pain to build because you can't make everyone happy, hardly anyone will appreciate the need for security and you take on a lot of legal liabilities for the protection of private information.  :yuck: (Sorry I couldn't help but post this one-lol)

INTERNET standards change.  What is acceptable use today is replaced with better functioning codes, or abilities tomorrow.  Keep learning and changing your site so it can move forward.

Java Script - is a wonderful and usually easy loading script for adding dynamic page functionalities and decorative elements. It doesn't provide a truly secure password protect log in for page access however, as the password can be read by anyone viewing page source.

Keep spammers at bay.  Do not post your email address on your web pages, forums or forms.
