Title: windows 7 - download link
Post by: hidden on March 15, 2011, 01:24:29 PM
Hello,

I have sent an email but thought I would post here, as well, in case this proves to be a faster way to receive a response.  First, I want to THANK YOU for this site; it has helped me, in the past, to update my site.  Lots of awesome information contained here!

I am hoping you will be able to help me with a problem I am having now.  I have used CuteSite Builder 4 for 8 to 10 years and I love it (especially since finding your site)!  Last year my computer crashed and I had to purchase a new laptop.  The HP laptop I bought came with Windows 7 Home Premium, 64 bit system already installed.  I have downloaded Service Pack 1 for Windows 7, as well.

The problem I am having is in trying to insert a File Download Link, everything else so far has worked as usual.  When I attempt to insert the link, I keep getting the following error message: "Error starting web component: File Download".  Do you know why this is happening and what I can do to fix this?

Also, would love to upgrade to CuteSite Builder 5; any idea where I could get a serial number?

Hope you are having a blessed week!

Thank you again for all your help, I truly appreciate you!

You posted in the best place to find your question.    I split it off so I could answer your issue specifically.

 :welsign:

Welcome to the forum.   Glad the site has been helpful.  We try.
I saw your email and I saw the post.  Decided answering on the forum is best, so others with your issue can also see some info.

You are looking to upgrade almost 5 years after the product was discontinued. CSB5 is not available and no serial numbers can be gotten unless you find someone that had a CSB 5 license and no longer uses the program.  They can notifiy Globalscape that their copy of the software has been transfered to you. Even the copies I had have already been claimed. Sorry.  BEWARE of anyone offering you cracked or wares software saying you do not need a serial number for this or that version. Usually when someone "breaks" the registration part of software they add trojans or other malware at the same time.

I have not run into the problem you are having.  So far, every option I have tried has worked in Windows 7 including file download link.  Did you COPY the program or fully install it?  Try installing the program from a fresh copy of the program.  Download it here:  http://www.globalscape.com/support/reg.aspx  ONLY GET CSB4 not 5!
Can install on top of current installation (it may remove/replace some files but you will get the last version of the files with this installation) which may repair your situation. Works in CSB 5...

You don't have to worry about using the File download link in CSB (any version).
The better way to link to a file is to upload the file directly using FTP software, then use URL style link.
Same thing for Flash, pdf and other files.  See this post:  http://samisite.com/forum/index.php?topic=355.0
(detail about FLASH here: http://samisite.com/forum/index.php?topic=435.0)
Read about using FTP here:  http://samisite.com/forum/index.php?topic=240.0   If you don't want to use FTP, your host may have the ability to upload a single file to the site.  Then you could just link to that file.

Let us know how it goes.

Thank you for responding so quickly.  I had loaded CuteSite Builder 4 from the original CD I had purchased.  I have also tried removing the program from my computer and reinstalling it without success.  I have tried downloading it from the website with success as well, just in case it was my CD.  I continue to get the same error message.

I appreciate you suggestions.  I have done something to side step the problem for now.  I will give your suggestions some consideration.

I do know that CuteSite Builder software had been discontinued for a while.  I found that out several years ago when I was looking to upgrade.  But, I have just now been looking at some of your other posts and found your review of Xara Web Designer 6.  I am now seriously considering purchasing Xara Web Designer for my next update.  Is it possible to convert a CSB file to a Xara file with their software?

Thank you again for responding to my question.  You are awesome! :flowers:

Sorry to hear that you have that issue with CSB 4 on Win 7.  If I had more CSB 5 serial numbers I would get you one...
But truly it is best to consider new options.

I like Xara Web Designer and so does Rick (he is actively using it instead of CSB for new content).
I am using the big brother of that program Xara Designer Pro for aWebWench.com (work in progress) since it is the next generation of the photo program I use most (same web options as XWD, but a few more photo options).

No program except CSB can open the tlx file.  If you stop using FRAMES for your site (read here: http://www.samisite.com/publish/framesorno.htm), you could edit the HTML pages in an HTML editor, or import the HTML pages into MS Expression Web to edit.

So far, I prefer building web pages with another builder XWD or Site Spinner, etc) and replacing existing pages, or supplementing with new pages and then going back to replace later.
Either way, you should make a complete copy of your site the way you have it now before ANY major changes. Make a backup of all HTML pages, images, files, etc on your host.
Then you have the freedom to play.  You can even test and play in a SUBDIRECTORY and your visitors will never see it until you link to those pages. Or delete them and they will never know they exist!

Donna, as Sami mentioned, I use XWD6 and recommend it as a replacement for CSB. It is very much like a modern version of CSB, but much more versatile and easier to use.

Rather than copy your existing site, my suggestion (assuming you have time), would be to create a new site with XWD. You can have a smart, modern and crisp-looking website, while at the same time, retaining the look and feel, colour scheme, etc, of your existing site. Kind of like a make-over!

I think once you have played with XWD for a while, you will be impressed with what you can do with it, so easily. We are here to help if you get stuck on anything, and also there is a very good forum dedicated to Xara products.

Rick

Take a look at the sample site you get with the program for ideas and what can be done inside Xara's web pages:
