Short

Long? absolutely not for me, even though in August there is a week of fire, where two days of this week are really unbearable, and the worst is that they are announcing that this summer will be the hottest of the last ten years.  :v8slap:

winter

Our Winter is about 4 weeks. And only gets COLD for a few days a year.
Some years I need sweaters but no coat.  :(
Our Spring and Fall are very short too. Some years we don't get a real Spring.
In Florida, our heat begins in late March early April and does not cool off till the beginning of October!  Too long for me.
90f + degree (32c +) for months. With very high humidity.
Feels like walking out of air conditioning into a steamy sauna.

French bread

I love the crunchy crust on French bread. Walked to the boulangerie every morning to get my daily baguette while we were travelling in France. So now I am re-motivated and started baking my own French bread again.

Hmm, seems we are spoilt with weather in Australia. It is middle of winter now, and Sydney is generally around 10-22c. Cool evenings and delightful sunny days. But I still like to go north to where my boat is (going next month for 3 weeks). It is typically 19-24c during the winter.

Altamura

Altamura, is an area in the Provincia di Bari, in the Puglia region of Italy,
It is famous for the bread they produce ("Pane di Altamura”, designated POD in Europe [Protected designation of origin] in 2003).

People around where I live like the white bread  :yuck:, it is very difficult to find a crunchy-toasted bread as the baguettes that Rick mentioned and with whom I share preferences.
I was accustomed to very good baguettes in Venezuela, were bread is made by Portuguese, the kings of bakeries there.
To have the Altamura bread here I have to drive +/- 30 Km round trip.

Hohenecken, Germany

I grew up with German brotchen, little crunchy crust rolls that were made several times a day with several local bakeries nearby. They were served warm, crunchy and so delicious. When we visted a few years ago I feasted on them and the very rich butter (almost had a cheese texture). We have neither here.  Also Barbarossa Bäckerei had the best Rasberry torte!

Creme Brulee

Mentioning the raspberry torte made me think of my favourite dessert: creme brulee! For years I have been on a world-wide quest for the perfect creme brulee.

Until recently, the winner, believe it or not, was a small restaurant in Dallas, Texas! But on my recent trip to France, it was soundly beaten by a perfect creme brulee, in a famous Paris restaurant, the Bofinger. The Bofinger has a magnificent traditional Belle Epoque setting, right near the Place de la Bastille.

The creme brulee has returned home!

Strawberry Shortcake

I am not much for desserts. But once in a while...
I guess if I had my pick of all desserts, it would be a fresh strawberry shortcake, where the shortcake crumbles and soaks up the fruit juices.  Most in restaurants use a round spongy thing instead of shortcake.  :yuck:  Even had an after dinner Liquor that tasted just like strawberry shortcake.

Fast-Food

Conspiracy?  The companies that make the fast-food, sodas, snacks, prepared food that makes people FAT are heavily invested in the DIET lines of foods and medicines to assist with side affects of obesity.

Unfortunately here in USA, it costs far more to eat healthy, choose fresh over prepared so some people can not afford that choice.

treasure

Tony, I got the idea from your word Indigo, which followed Strauss. Indigo and the Forty Thieves is an operetta composed by Johann Strauss II.

Ali Baba is a character from medieval Arabic literature. He is described in the adventure tale of Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves. That's where I got the connection to "indigo".

One day Ali Baba is at work collecting and cutting firewood in the forest, and he happens to overhear a group of forty thieves visiting their treasure store. The treasure is in a cave, the mouth of which is sealed by magic. It opens on the words "iftah ya simsim" (commonly written as "Open Sesame" in English), and seals itself on the words "Ikfil ya simsim" ("Close Sesame"). When the thieves are gone, Ali Baba enters the cave himself, and takes some of the treasure home.

 :)

Did you know that the story of Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves and stories about Sinbad were NOT part of the original One Thousand and One Nights Arabic folk tales?  They were added later by European translators!

dic.com has a very LONG page for bow.  :ss-shocked:
and two ways to pronounce bow.

You started this game with a good understanding of English.  I would have to start from the very beginning with Spanish. And rely on translation software that can give rather strange results sometimes... :D

Tony, sometimes I have the impression that your English is better than mine!

... And rely on translation software that can give rather strange results sometimes... :D

And do you think I do not do it?
I have to recheck EVERY post and I frequently use Google translator to construct the phrase. Google and Word help me also with the ortography. Still, I know I make "orrors", sometimes I notice them when I reread what I wrote.
I am unable to hold a conversation in English, nor understand a song, even understand a movie in English, I just capture some isolated words. This forum has helped me especially to understand what I READ, writing is the only way I had to converse with an English speaking person.

One of my nightmares:

Thru

Jesus!! I had problems even writing them!!

Tony, sometimes I have the impression that your English is better than mine!

Thank you Rick, but please, do not esagerate!!   :D
Have a good trip. Enjoy it.

ERRATA: exaggerate

Did you see?? I wrote it in Ital-English...   :-[
Italian: esagerare
Spanish: (more simile): exagerar

What a mess…!!

Rick is not exaggerating.  I often feel that I know the least about my own language.   The words you listed are difficult for many people.

Basic (programming language)

Tony, what you wrote is astonishing. I had the impression that you can converse easily in English!

Elemental...

(Mr. Watson...)    :D

Exact Rick, that's a fact!. Same thing happens with my Italian; I can understand 100% hearing and reading, but I can't speak very well. Why? I don't know, I think it is a cerebral matter, who was forced to speak Spanish for such a long time. Same happens to all adults that emigrate to another country; they will never speak currently the new language or at least without a particular accent of their primitive language. This not happens with kids, they will learn and will loose their native accent faster and forever.
Now I can understand my parents who never learned to speak Spanish, even after 50 years in that country.  ;)
