Clarification:
In the movie,
Victor Victoria, the lead actress Julie Andrews (best known as nannies in
Mary Poppins and
Sound of Music) plays a strange character. She is dressed as a man half the time. The other half she is dressed as a woman. But when she is dressed as a woman, her character is acting like a MAN dressed up as a woman!
The movie is silly. Her character is funny.
She is a female singer that could not get hired.
But the club she wanted to play in would hire a cross-dressing MAN.
So to get the job, she said she was a MAN that could LOOK and SOUND like a woman.
She was immediately hired by the night club.
The rest of the movie revolves around the fact that she is NOT a MAN but has to act like a man...except when that man is trying to be a woman. Then she can look/sound like herself, but not BE herself.
SO.... "Andrews plays a woman playing a man playing a woman"
