Change one thing word game

(1/1508) > >>

Jim Slagle:
The object is to change one letter ONLY, and make a new word. You can drop a letter or add a letter, but only change one thing. You have to keep it going until no one can make another word. You CANNOT play off of your own word. NO PROPER NOUNS AND NO ACRONYMS ALLOWED! Each word played must be able to be verified at DICTIONARY.com. Latin botanical definitions will no longer be accepted.

When no one can make another word. That's the end of the game. The last successful person is the winner.
Example:
player 1-dark
player 2-dart
player 3-tart

Also, you can't repeat a word that was previously used. Ex: word words word wouldn't work. If you want to make sure that your word was not previously used you can use the "search this thread" button at the top of the game thread.

clarifications by samrc:
- no wandering letters.  (Ex: pets can not become pest.)   Request for the rule
- no abbreviations.  (Ex: lbs and lb     like acronyms, abbreviations aren't true words)      Request for the rule
- no hyphenated words. (ex: all-day)  (Discussion about this issue here) and here too
- words beginning with capital letters should not be used since they are proper nouns which are disallowed in original game definition.
- must find the word in the SEARCH on Dictionary.com not just in an example or sentence (ex: wattler is fine, twattles is not)  (Discussion about this issue here)
- no Prefix/Suffix only words (examples:  pre-, re-, mis-, dis-, -er, -ment...) which are shown in dictionary.com with a - before or after the word. These can not be used alone in a sentence.  (Discussion about this issue here)
- medical terms ok if they appear in regular word search on dictionary.com and follow the same rules as above ie not abbreviation or prefix/suffix etc.   (Discussion about this issue here)
- An S CAN be used in the game to create a plural, but in the event no following word can be proposed, the winner of the game will be the poster of the previous post, where that post is the singular of the final post.   Note that this rule would not apply to every case where an s is added as the last letter, only where it creates a plural. For example, stay > stays would be OK, because stay, and stays can be a verb (I know it can also be a singular and plural noun, but not exclusively)   Discussion about this issue

RICK:
  topline
  topliner
In my understanding, the word cannot win a game if the s is added to the current word to make a plural. So I think toplines would have been legitimate. The word which would not have been legitimate is topliners.  Also, another point: I think the plural s can be played, and the previous word only wins if the plural s word cannot be followed by another word (ie, the plural s word cannot finish the game as the winner).  Discussion/agreement about this issue
