CSB Publishing Settings - BASICS
« on: October 30, 2007, 05:03:47 PM »
CSB has limited built-in FTP functions which allow you to PUBLISH your website.  This means that CSB will  connect to your host, upload changes to your website, upload the images and other inserted special files and disconnect for you.

But to do that, your settings must be done properly in CSB.  Always compare YOUR welcome email from your web host for the details THEY want you to use.

Take a look at the CSB settings for Samisite.  (You can access that screen in CSB by choosing PUBLISH SITE and OPTIONS, MODIFY.)  Below the image is a description of the fields:

FTP SITE NAME:
This is how your HOST is called within CSB.  Call it anything you want that makes sense to you. I use the name of site and host  Ex: samsite-TCH

WEB SITE ADDRESS:
This is your website url, your domain location.  Ex:  http://www.samisite.com

FTP HOST ADDRESS:
This is assigned by your host.  It is usually ftp.yourdomainname.com or an IP address.
Often with a new account, they will give you an IP address that should be used for a couple days, then ask you to switch to an ftp..... type address.       This field is also known as the HOST NAME in WSFTP and some other FTP software.

FTP HOST PORT:
This is USUALLY 21.  If your host needs something different, they will let you know in the setup email or on the support pages.  This is basically the DOOR that CSB will use to enter your web host computer.

FTP Directory:
This is the FOLDER at your web host where they want you to put your website pages.  Some hosts allow you to upload to the ROOT directory (the main area of your webspace). In that case they ask you to either:
leave this field blank or use a / in the field.

But most assign a specific folder INSIDE your root folder to hold your public website files.  The special folder is often called web, www, public, public_html, html but your host may have called it something different.  This one is HOST SPECIFIC!  If they say you should use public-html then type public_html in the field with no quotes or other symbols.   This field is also known as the REMOTE SITE FOLDER in WSFTP and some other FTP software.

Two potential problems with this setting:
1. If you do not put your files into the correct folder on the host, your website will not be seen even though you completed a publish in CSB!
2. If you try to publish to your root folder and the host has specified another to hold your website files, the publish may not even go through!  In fact, you could get a not allowed access type error!

FTP USER NAME:
This is assigned by your host.  The account access name. Often it is CAse SenSiTIVe.  Make sure you type it right.   This field is also known as the USERID in WSFTP and some other FTP software.

FTP PASSWORD:
This is assigned by your host.  The account access password. Often it is CAse SenSiTIVe.  Make sure you type it right.  Then repeat it in the CONFIRM PASSWORD FIELD

DEFAULT FILE NAME:
This is how your website server defines the main webpage in each directory.  Many servers use index.html or index.htm  but many Windows servers use default.htm or default.html instead.  Check with your host support pages for the preferred home page setting.  CSB will hold this and remember that any page in your CSB file that is marked as the HOME PAGE will automatically become the proper page name when you publish.

This is very nice when you want to make a holiday home page.  Make a new page, right click it, PROPERTIES, PAGE PROPERTIES and check the box to make it a home page. Publish.  Suddenly your NEW page becomes the index.htm (or default.htm) page!  To go back to the original just check the box in the properties of the original page and republish.  Simple.  YOU don't have to remember to rename the file.  CSB will do it for you!!!

FTP MODE:
This checkbox allows you to make the type of connection with your host Passive or not.  If you have problems staying connected, check or uncheck this box and try again.  Often fixes the issue!
