QUICK TIPS!
« on: December 02, 2008, 02:58:34 PM »
This thread is all about Quick Tips and Tricks, simple instructions for some of the favorite functions/options of CSB and Trellix.

If you want to post one of your own with a picture or two, link to your image, I will grab it and put it on Samisite and relink it for you.

Be sure to Name the tip and say which version of the software you know it will work on (we can edit that later if necessary).

Use custom fields.  :hearts:   (Trellix through CSB 5, page properties area)

Need a phrase or two to reappear many many many pages?
Do you want your copyright statement to appear at the bottom of the page and make it easy to update?  Do you want to have a special sale announcement on just a few pages? ETC.

- Go to your home page of the tlx file.
- Right click on PROPERTIES PAGE.  Look for the CUSTOM fields.
- Type a statement into one or all of the custom fields.  (Don't use characters like " ' < or > since they can interfere with your HTML code)
- Save that.

Now go to each page that you want to have this statement and do the following:
Click your menu and look for Insert Field. (May be slightly different on different versions of Trellix/CSB but all have it!)

- Choose your custom field

- Choose your HOME page.

- Ok
Statement from your home page appears on your pages automatically.

Need to change the statement?
- Go to the HOME Page Properties and update the custom field.
All your pages with that field will update at the same time!

Example: a copyright statement with a date typed into CUSTOM1 field and put at the bottom of each page shown here using INSERT FIELD Custom1.

At the beginning of the year, I make ONE change to the CUSTOM1 field to adjust the copyright date and all pages with that statement are updated at the same time when I publish!

DON'T turn off your table borders! :hearts:   (Trellix through CSB 5, page properties area)

When you turn OFF the table borders (the lines inside and outside) they will disappear in Internet Explorer, but still show up in other browsers.

Instead:  HIDE them.  Leave the box CHECKED and use the DOTTED lines to define your table and they disappear in several browsers.
- Right Click your table, choose table properties.
- Choose the DOTTED lines instead of solid

You don't have to use the BORDERS in your webpage! :hearts:   (Trellix through CSB 5, page properties area)

You can turn OFF your borders and build your web page with just tables.
Go to this page to see how to adjust your borders.

Rebuild your page fastest way with Copy/Paste from existing page      (Trellix through CSB 5)

It's a pain.  And time consuming to have to rebuild a page.  But you can do it.
I have been trying different copy/paste modes for CSB use..  Best results:
- Use IE not  Firefox to capture the table
- Paste into CSB.  All text and colors remain.
- Manually insert images.  Can use INSERT PICTURE, or just copy paste the image from the web page into the table.

I found that when I copied/pasted from Firefox, the table did not retain it's original settings.  Sometimes colors changed.

Split your design window to see two pages at the same time!    :hearts:    (Trellix through CSB 5)

You can split your design window horizontally or vertically so you can see two pages at the same time.
This is helpful when you want to copy content, or make a page similarly.
The split DOES NOT PUBLISH. It is only a visual tool within the program itself.
Simply grab the top handle and pull down for horizontal split or the left handle and pull to the right for a vertical split.

Then you can choose any page to fill each half of the window.
Full tutorial about the split window here.

In addition, you can also split the page using the menu option View, then select Split Page Area > Horizontally/Vertically.

Use the same View option to remove Split

Use the STYLE setting to define your headings, etc.    :hearts:    (Trellix through CSB 5)

Under the FORMAT area is an option for STYLE.
Like Word, WordPerfect and other word processors, you can define a STYLE for your text.  If you want all your headers for paragraphs to be Italic Bold size 14 Arial, indented or not, etc.
Don't change your text manually.  Let CSB do the work for you!

Simply define a style in the FORMAT > STYLE > area
Then type your text as normal.  Once you are done building your page/paragraph, etc, you can come back and apply your special styles to your text!  Simply highlight the text, chose FORMAT > STYLE > Choose which one you want, then APPLY the Style, OK.

Great thing is if you change the STYLE settings under format, your text will change for you!
If you have 5 headings and you want to adjust the size of those headings, you make ONE change and all 5 headings change for you!

Turn on the Spaces and other settings to see your extra characters in the page.    :hearts:    (Trellix through CSB 5)

Open your tlx design file.
Click TOOLS > OPTIONS
Switch to the TEXT tab
Consider putting check boxes beside these two to help debug your web page.
Spaces (puts a DOT for every space on your web page)
    Named anchors

Very useful for identifying extra spaces that should be removed.
The DOTS are only shown in your design window and do NOT publish.  Can be left on all the time if it is helpful

Find out why your table is too long or wide.      (Trellix through CSB 5)

Open your tlx design file.
Turn all the borders on your table (inside and outside)

- Do you have an extra column or extra row?
- Do you have a table INSIDE the table that is wider than the main table? Turn on the lines for ALL the tables inside if necessary.  If you can't see the side of the inner table, it may not fit properly and is pushing the main table wider.
- Do you have extra spaces (see tip above to find out)?
- Use FIREFOX to visit your site.  Using the free Add-on "Web Developer Toolbar", turn on lines for your tables.  You may have a hidden table you don't realize.
