Slow loading on forum
« on: March 26, 2007, 07:25:30 PM »
Hi Sam, Probably nothing you can do - but I just wanted you to know that over the last few days any page I have visited here is taking a super long time to load even up to a minute after the log in - I am on high speed broadband and it was not like that before - maybe its just me and something with my server - or maybe something has changed?

Agreed. It is slow but not too much at 32 seconds to load (Done = 0 items remaining) Samisite home page which usually takes about 10/15 seconds.

Please don't compare ANYTHING to my home page!
I am a bit embarrassed by it.  :-[  Home page is VERY overloaded!
It used to be ok but it has become VERY cluttered.
I have way to much CRUD on it and I break just about every rule on that page! Everything I tell everyone else NOT to do, I am doing.  Too much movement (animation), too long, too heavy, too many images, some are too heavy, and I layer too many table inside table, inside table, inside table, inside table, inside table... I keep thinking it is time for a freshen up...but just can't face the task yet...

BUT...on the bright side it only takes 15 seconds.. rofl  and has NO SOUND.

Too many smilies? (they are tiny!)
Too many images?  Maybe need to trim back to only allowed avatars  :(

It's late but finally turned in a help ticket to host to check out situation.  :luck:
Crossed for luck in finding quick fix.

MySql has been restarted.
I also optimized the tables and checked for errors (none found).

Is the forum loading faster now?

I can't tell the difference since my connection has been fine all the time.

???
Forum loads very quickly from here in Florida (less than 2 seconds) at my work machine, home machine and at my mothers (on her new dsl connection) on both IE and Firefox.

So maybe it is not on the TCH server or my site specifically.
Maybe it is location related?

There are 4 ways to connect to this forum.  Maybe there is a difference for you if you use a different address (should be the same if DNS is working properly)...
http://forum.samisite.com
http://www.forum.samisite.com
http://samisite.com/forum/
http://www.samisite.com/forum/

I really don't know....grasping at anything about now.  Especially since I can not SEE what you folks see... :surrender:

it's very slow compared to a few days ago.

It never was speedy for me, 10 to 20 seconds load time for a page.

Here's what it took for this page 1:38 EDST

Page created in 60.146 seconds with 24 queries.

think it may be the bad block of ip addresses at TCH?  their forum was slow until they changed to the new block.

And this is what I get from work:

IN IE: Page created in 0.096 seconds with 10 queries.
IN FF: Page created in 0.098 seconds with 12 queries.

If it were bad IP's, wouldn't that affect EVERYONE accessing the forum, not just a few?

Sam, Today it said page created in 3.16 seconds when I logged in but I actually counted to 13 before it appeared - opening posts today takes anywhere from 20 to over thirty seconds  :(         I am in Florida now too...

Yeah it is a bit puzzling ... especially when it was so fast before and seems to have suddenly just started happening. For sure any site can be slow on occasion but this has remained consistant since it began. I am logging in from the same address as I ever was. If any of this helps??

Just noting that it took 23 seconds for that last message to post and 19 seconds to open this reply screen.

I sent this to tech support:

Quote
Had these comments about the forum today (after re-start of mysql).
"seemed about the same and posting is very slow to load too."

"Here's what it took for this page 1:38 EDST
Page created in 60.146 seconds with 24 queries."

Yet about the same time, I had results like this:
IN IE: Page created in 0.096 seconds with 10 queries.
IN FF: Page created in 0.098 seconds with 12 queries.

What could be causing this?

Then Host Tech support just now replied with this:

Quote
I am getting "Page created in 0.342 seconds with 11 queries." right now. However, If anyone getting a high value like 60.146, it should defenitely because of connectivity, becasue forum is working fine and the server load is very low.

So it appears I can not FIX the problem... You must report it to your ISPs. :(

Was considering posting this topic temporarily for any member to be able to post results.  But since tech support says its a connectivity issue, I am not sure it would accomplish anything.....  :(

A connectivity issue???? That - hmm I dunno about that ... For example MSN forums go through phases where their forums are extremely slow and if you search it out you will find several forums complaining of it at once and eventually and/or occasionally Msn will announce a server update or some other server change. After their last change a few months ago the forums in general have slowed considerably and for most users.

I also wanted you to know that over the last few days hitting post or a link often does not go through immediately and sometimes takes two or three clicks.

Today, some of the posts I tried to visit didn't load at all and I got the site is experiencing difficulties try later message. Also on some topic page loads any smileys in the page don't show up but may after hitting refresh.

Good luck Sam I wish I could be of more help.

Hey Turtle....
This forum is the only SUBDOMAIN that samisite.com has.
Since the main site and subdirectories seem to load faster for you folks, could this be a DNS issue on the SUBDOMAIN? ???

I wonder... What about their routers? In relation to a message mentioned about similar qualities having occured at msn sites, it seems to me less likely that people from various parts of the country suddenly all started having this problem at the same time due to individual server problems.

PS I don't tend to think it's the smileys as per page load there are no more than there were on average.

No DNS would have resolved by now
and I use samistie.com/forum

Your main site is still fast, so its not routing or server.  ???

Anything changed in the forum software or the .htaccess  in the last week or so ?

It is usually 40 to 60 seconds.  Trouble seems to be on the Comcast side.  Most sites are fast but there are a few that are slow.  Comcast says nothing is wrong  :banghead:

Turtle - I hear ya what you were saying about the routers and servers but I was thinking that because a company as big as Sam's host has several routers and servers that maybe the forum is on a different one than the site due to the nature of it. I know someone who works at a host in Hawaii and he told me sometimes a persons site may even be stored on several different servers depending on its size and over what period of time it is developed. CGI bins may be on a separate server that is dedicated to them for example. He also told me that sometimes when they do maintenance they switch things from one server to the other .... not that I understand all that he tells me all the time but I picture that with all the mainframes they have to handle their loads it is more of a hardware thing going on ... who knows maybe it was as simple as someone needed to replace a cable  rofl

Is anybody still loading it slow??????????????

It was not the server as Sami and others did not have a problem.
And no one else on the server reported a problem that I know of.

Routing issues can happen for different people.
It depends on how your ISP connects to the net and then how you are routed to the server.
Many times there are as many as 15-20 hops.
Sometimes a path has a problem as I think this was the case and it looks like it was fixed.

Nope...REALLY don't think it was at my host TCH.
As unbelievable as is sounds, TCH is very good about saying when THEY have a difficulty. If they have an issue, THEY DO admit it and not hide problems. It's one of the reasons I really recommend them to others. No other host I have dealt with (or must deal with now) is run the way TCH is.  Not that they are perfect by any means. Mistakes/goofs can happen. But truly believe the problem was not in the TCH equipment if they say it wasn't.

The forum is in PART of my allotted space, all of it residing on the same server.

Since there are many hops between your pc and the forum, there might have been similar routing paths as your connections were coming close to the site.  Maybe the path that MY ISP has does not go through the slow router(s).  When I did a tracert, I had no slow downs along the way.  You folks might be struggling if you are going through a bad area on the way...

I found a neat visual route tool that
shows how a site gets to your computer.

wish I had it before this.

Visual Route sample of this forum and other sites.

Sam now that this has come to a conclusion and with such interesting info coming to light, might this post be moved to general discussion in case it happens again or so it won't discourage a newcomer if they happen to get slow load times?
