I love some of the definitions of boot!

boot: an instrument of torture for the leg, consisting of a kind of vise extending from the knee to the ankle, tightened around the leg by means of screws.

boot: British - the trunk of an automobile.

That's a joke! Of course, British is the correct English, so instead, the definition of trunk should be:

trunk: American term for the boot of an automobile

boot    That's the right name for what you call the trunk!  8)
Ah.... I misunderstood.... Elephant > Trunk > Boot
I thought you were saying an elephant's trunk is called a boot.  But you were only looking at trunk > boot  (a 2 word not 3 word chain!  :v8slap:)

Nope...I DO NOT accept this.  British english may have been the mother language, but the child has usurped the parent.

Sami, what's the connection vintage > clothes?

Only in the eyes of Americans, has the child usurped the parent! You can develop your own unofficial version of English, but you cannot claim it as "correct" English! :)

Vintage Clothes?  A woman's concept.  MANY people will pay huge $$$ for vintage clothing (40's, 50's 60's, 70's...) made by top designers of the period. They are considered classics and are chic to mix with current fashion elements.  There are a couple TV programs ("real" people) that feature women that spend thousands of dollars on their vintage clothes collections as wearable art/investments!  Lots of shops specialize in this.

Of course, you can do anything you like, but that will not make it correct! And if you use an American dictionary, you can't expect to have correct English definitions.

But if you use a more definitive, authoritative English dictionary, such as the Oxford dictionary, you will have a correct result:

boot: a space in the back of a car for carrying luggage.

trunk: N. Amer. the boot of a car

Since the Online version of the Oxford English Dictionary is not available without a PAID subscription, I will not consider them to be a definitive answer for anything at this point. I refuse to pay to do basic research, even if the resource is well known and dependable.

In contrast, the American WEBSTERS dictionary (what I grew up with) is available to anyone, world-wide.

Sami, you are trying to sidetrack the discussion!  :) Whether a dictionary is online or not, free or not, is totally irrelevant! We are talking about whether a dictionary is a credible reference of the correct English language. The Oxford English Dictionary is THE definitive reference on correct English.

The American Websters Dictionary, and certainly not free online dictionaries, can not come anywhere near to having the respect or credibility of the Oxford Dictionary, when it comes to correct English language reference.

The Oxford English Dictionary is THE definitive reference on correct English.

Part of North America and the whole Central and South America, Spanish language, except for Brazil and other small ex-colonial states, is spoken by millions of citizens from different countries, but the point of reference for the correct use of the language is based and ruled by the Diccionario de La Real Academia Española (Spain, Europe) :)

I do not want British definitions.  I want American English definitions.
The language that I speak and read is American English.
    - the storage area in a vehicle a TRUNK not a boot.  If I told my neighbor to get something out of the BOOT I would get strange looks!
    - An apartment is not a flat where I live.
    - When movies are dubbed into ENGLISH, more use the AMERICAN English, not British.
    - When books are translated into ENGLISH, more use the AMERICAN English.
Though the British Empire spread the British version of English world-wide, the American version has been thriving!
I grew up in Germany. I went to a german school for a while. They were teaching American English in the German school system. Obviously closer physically to the British Isles, yet they were teaching AMERICAN English...And American English is now spoken by the majority of young adults in Germany when we went back to visit!

We live on opposite sides of the world. Aussie's speak English but it is also not a pure British English.  Closer yes, but it is also moving away from the British English.  :)

Hey Tony...I notice that the Puerto Rican Spanish is not necessarily standard either.  Seems when populations move away from the source, they develop thier own version of th elanguage.
