« on: March 01, 2007, 10:03:40 AM »
??? Does anyone know of Website Maker?

It is the web development software of Magix, the new owner of Xara.

It looks interesting, but I could not find any trial download. Did I miss something?

I looked too  :surrender: & didn't find one - nor even screen shots - I forgot to look for support information specifically.

I got the answer. Website Maker is an online tool. No use to us. If you want to try it, you can do a sample website here: http://www.magix-website.com

aha! And I saw nothing that would indicate that otherwise when I was looking at the site. I might not have read every single line of information but they should make that clear right away.

Thanks for the investigative journalism.

:ss-shocked: It does'nt even give one a hint that it is an on-line service. In fact the system requirements show that you need 300MB of hard disk free space.

Stay away.  :)

I have used Magix products. It is a German company and the one that I have is not very user friendly. Every time I have asked a question, their response has been that their software is not at fault, i am and they do not give any help to steer me in the correct direction. Nevver have been so critial of any software company as this one.

I am VERY sorry to hear that....and concerned.  They just bought out XARA (I love the vector program Xara Xtreme Pro) and their support area has been highly responsive. Maybe they will just allow XARA to basically run as is and just keep the profits... :luck:

One hint to its being online:

Web address & 250 MB storage space included

(I checked it out, even after the previous posts, because I'm not necessarily averse to trying an online editor - but I don't want one that's tied to a specific host, which this one does seem to be.)

I'm not necessarily averse to trying an online editor
All that I have seen are hosted editors.  In other words, you can edit the files that are maintained on that host with the supplied editor.  If you copy your html pages and put them on another site, you would not be able to use that original editor to modify the site.  Nasty limitation.  If service goes down, prices go up, or other problems happen, you have no recourse.  No way to move the site.

I have never seen online editor that will allow you to open your own chosen site files from ANY host.
Ex:  hosted editor on xzy.com that allows you to load in/edit pages hosted on different company's server like my favorite host totalchoicehosting.com.   A service like that might be interesting but I don't know that it exists.

You can use editors built into browsers if you don't mind HTML editing...but that moves you away from the CSB type building.
