(non-political) US voting today
« on: November 04, 2008, 02:30:25 PM »
Well, today is another presidential race in USA.

I applaud people that take part in the process and politely ask anyone eligible to vote today, to do so.

This year, the election is so important to so many people that lines are terribly long, even with the weeks of early voting and the absentee ballots.  I was in line for an hour and a half before voting this morning, and I was there long before the polls opened.  By the end of voting today, we should have set a new high for voter participation.  :clapping:  That is exciting.

The outcome will be historic.  Either a black man as president, or a white woman as vice president.  BOTH firsts. Both of these are controversial to some people.

I can tell you from experience that people will get more worked up as the day goes along.  And tempers will flare as people go to the wrong place and are denied voting.

I used to volunteer to run a polling precinct for many years. My last year being a clerk was in 2000, the year of the FLORIDUH! hanging chads and terrible election count/recount.  My precinct had a perfect rating, no errors (got a bonus for it too!).

But that was my last year because tempers were short and I was actually threatened with bodily harm by a voter.  In our state, you can not vote at any polling station convenient to you.  You must vote IN THE PRECINCT where you live. So anyone that recently moved gets confused about where to vote and if they wait till late in the day, they can sometimes not get to vote if they are on the wrong side of town.  I refused to allow a woman who did not live in our precinct to vote at our facility and she became abusive and threatening, in front of many witnesses that did NOTHING to stop her or calm her.  She had to be escorted out.  Others were belligerent and were verbally abusive that year.  So I stopped putting myself in harm's way.
