Thanks for your thoughts Tony. Those tragic fires were in the south-east of Australia, a little north of Melbourne. I live in Sydney, but I have a 160 acre forest property about 300km north of those fires, and I was worried about that. However the weather has cooled now, and the risk reduced. I heard that at times those fires were racing 20 km in just a few minutes - no one in the path of those fires can escape.

We have had several abbreviations lately (including mine) however my recollection is that these are not allowed. Could we have a ruling on it? My vote would be not to use abbreviations from here on.

Interesting request for a ruling. I tend to agree with Rick because in my humble opinion it makes the game more enjoyable to constructive and see the derivatives of recognized words. The moment abbreviations are introduced the word construction part of the game is lost. Sorry others!

Abbreviations definitely are not words, but some abbreviations have become acronyms and are indeed words. E.g. F.A.Q. or 'FAQ', the abbreviation for Frequently Asked Questions is an acronym and a word. Although I would never say the 'faq' word simply because it sounds like a swear word, 'faq' is recognized as a noun by Dictionary.com. However 'lbs' or 'tbs' are abbreviations and they are neither acronyms nor words. The original rules laid down by Jim, on page 1, states acronyms are not allowed. We understood his rule to include abbreviations and acronyms which are not yet recognized words.

I see two choices, either rule out abbreviations and acronyms that are not yet recognized words, or allow them but only if they are in D.com. Either way, I will abide by what is decided.

Thanks for your helpful analysis Ed. I mostly agree, except for your suggestion that we could possibly be allowed to use abbreviations etc if they are in D.com. I think most of the commonly used abbreviations are in D.com, so that would not put much restriction on it.

My rationale for suggesting that abbreviations and acronyms not be allowed is simply that they can be an easy way out of tricky situations, instead of forcing us to really think hard about a solution. We have had some great words lately, some of which I have never heard before.

I would vote (if I can do it...) NO for acronyms and abbreviations  :noshake:

Even the already discussed and sanctioned by THE JUDGE,  rofl  which is to convert words to plural or vice versa, doesn't make sense to me. That is an easier way, easier than find an abbreviation or an acronym, to get out of a tricky situation. Just a comment.  :)

Sono d'accordo circa il singolare / plurale, Tony! Tuttavia, il giudice ha stabilito!

Thanks for the input!!    :clapping: :clapping: :hearts: :clapping: :clapping:

On this one, I agree with Rick and Tony:  I would vote NO for acronyms and abbreviations
 :agree:
My ruling based on the original post by Jim which was in all caps:
NO PROPER NOUNS AND NO ACRONYMS ALLOWED!
Though he did not address abbreviations, I truly think they were not part of the Jim's original intent.
The object is to change one letter ONLY, and make a new word.
I don't really think that abbreviations fit the category properly so I will add the clarification to the original post.
We have let proper nouns, acronyms and abbreviations sneak in every now and then.... but they really don't belong.

We have INDEED had some great words lately.  Very challenging.

Even the already discussed and sanctioned by THE JUDGE, which is to convert words to plural or vice versa, doesn't make sense to me.

Rick is right.....the judge established this one already.  S addition/subtraction is fully acceptable and falls within the original rule posted by Jim:  You can drop a letter or add a letter, but only change one thing.
Of course there is always another option Tony.
I could create and exception to that rule to fit your needs.
Everyone EXCEPT Tony is allowed to use the added/removed S to change the word.
Your choice...  >:D

Lets take the word back to

I will follow your word, but I remind you that the LAST word in play was tba, which can't be converted to tubs

Tony, it was decided to not allow abbreviations and acronyms, so, Sami decided to restart from the last word before the abbreviations, which was TUB.

No exception created so Tony CAN use the S even though he thinks no one should.   rofl
