Elvis

Sami, I know you are younger than us, but don't ask "who is Elvis?"!  LOL

(BTW, I didn't forget your DVD's. I am not home yet. Spending a month on the boat, then resuming my trip back to Sydney. Should be there early September.)

Who?? ???        rofl rofl rofl rofl rofl

(Elvis Costello  :yuck:,  Elvis Presley  )

Of COURSE I know who Elvis is!  Yummy in his younger years.  In January 1973 I was one of the MILLIONS of females that watched his concert LIVE from HAWAII via satellite.  I saw him perform LIVE!!!   OMG!!!!    :hapscream: :hapscream: :hapscream:

How exciting that in my short life span I have seen technology change so drastically! We have:
- gone from black and white tv to hdtv,
- from man in the moon to space station (saw the 1st walk on the moon live like everyone that could),
- saw typwriters become electric, with memories, then become obsolete as computers went from entire rooms to palm-sized,
- concerts from live stage, to live via sattelite (Elvis was first to do that) to Live Aid (world-wide event).
all accomplished in 50 years!

mementos

I begun fixing cash registers actuated by handle at The National Cash Register Co. when I was 17 yo
25 years later, the last system I serviced  was a main frame that occupied an entire building floor.
The cash registers were already on line terminals by that time...

I like these memories  :D

forgetful

When i was a young engineer, I worked on the manufacture of telephone exchanges that were entirely electro-mechanical - lots of clicking and clacking relays! These days, telephone systems are powerful computers, and fill a box on the roadside instead of a building!!

past

Yea, my first "electronic" machine was the Post Tronic (see it here: h**p://www.thocp.net/hardware/ncr_post_tronic.htm).

In 1967 I spend three months in Puerto Rico studying this machine.
It was all vacuum tubes, relays and a LOT of mechanics...

See an NCR brief here: h**p://home.paonline.com/knippd/whoisncr/whoisncr.htm

future

I used to make wreaths out of the punch cards used to program/update those things!  Boxes and boxes of them were folded, spray painted, glittered, you name it.

I have an old 1930's console radio in my house with vacuum tubes. gonna get rid of it in the fall when we have our garage sale!  Took some bad damage by the nasty kids that broke into my house.

wash

I have several old cassettes and vinyls that are no longer available.  Will be using the laptop to record some of that material into digital format. I just loaded an old 1 hour VCR tape of a fireplace burning and took a series of 5 two minute tests, capturing the video.  The best quality took 438MB for only 2 minutes of capture!  To get the full 1 hour moved over would take 13+ GB of space!  WOW!   :ss-shocked:  I have used Roxio's software for years and the latest Creator 2010 has VERY basic video capture/editing.  (The Pro version has way too much in it for me!)

One project I have in mind before the end of the year:
Before the video deteriorates too much, I want to screen capture some individual shots off my old wedding video when I finally get to the back of the closet again. Certain people only appear in that video. They were not captured in any of the photos taken that day. I want to see if I can get good screen shots. I really want photos of them if I can.

It's seems that we all are in the same wave...
Washing dishes is the ONLY work that I don't do at home. Unfortunately, my wife used to go out to spend time with her family, usually for three months periods (once she stayed six...) and washing dishes was my ONLY regret.
You can't live only with paper or plastic dishes, it's a mess...  :verysad:

Yes, I shouldn't post without an explanation... sorry.
Really, it was the Black Forest cake that lead me to that word (the diet make me think so... rofl)
I used to go to a German colony near the capital where I lived, to eat sausages and that cake... those dishes were their specialties.

Rick, I was going to say the same thing!  Sometimes when it is brewing fresh, my mouth starts to water because it smells so good. And going past the coffee grinder/fresh beans smells so tasty to the nose. Comforting and rich.  Then you taste it with your mouth and the taste buds register it as burnt water!   :yuck:  :yuck:
